AMAZIAH.

—Biblical Data:

1. Priest at Beth-el in the reign of Jeroboam II. When the prophet Amos came to Beth-el, and there prophesied the death of Jeroboam and the captivity of Israel, Amaziah tried to expel him from the kingdom of Israel (Amos, vii. 10, 12, 14). 2. A Simeonite (I Chron. iv. 34). 3. A Levite of the family of Merari and ancestor of Ethan (I Chron. vi. 30).

G. B. L.—In Rabbinical Literature:

According to R. Meir, the priest Amaziah is identical with the false prophet mentioned in I Kings, xiii. 11 et seq. (Yer. Sanh. xi. 30b and Cant. R. ii. 5).
