BENEDICTUS, COENRAAD:

"Mohel" and surgeon at Surinam, Dutch Guiana, about 1830. Nothing is known of his life nor of his literary activity other than the bare fact that he published at Paramaribo in 1830 (?) a tract describing the operation of circumcision, together with a series of questions and answers for use in examining candidates for the office of mohel. The book is extremely rare. The Hebrew quotations occurring in the text are filled in by the author in his own writing, as there was probably no Hebrew type to be had in Paramaribo at that time. The title of the book is "Examen voor den Nieuw aan te Nemen Moël of Besnijder der Israël. Kinderen. Hierbij Gedeeltelijk het Mannelijk lid Ontleed, ook Leersame Beschrijving der Besnijdenis en Circum Cisione Operatie . . . in Vragen en Antwoorden."
