LÉVY, MICHEL:
French physician; born at Strasburg Sept. 28, 1809; died at Paris March 13, 1872; educated at the University of Montpellier (M.D. 1834). In 1836 he became professor of hygiene at the Val-de-Grâce in Paris; in 1845 he was appointed professor of pathology at Metz; two years later he returned in this capacity to the Val-de-Grâce, of which medical school he became director in 1856. In the Crimean war he had for a few months charge of a hospital in Constantinople. He was the author of "Traité d'Hygiène Publique et Privée," Paris, 1843-45 (5th ed. 1869); "Sur la Rougeole des Adultes," ib. 1847; "Histoire de la Méningite Cérébro-Spinale Observée au Val-de-Grâce en 1848 et 1849," ib. 1850; "Sur l'Hygiène Militaire," ib. 1867; "Sur les Hôpitaux-Baraques," ib. 1871.
