HADASSAH (lit. "the myrtle"):

Earlier name of Esther, Mordecai's cousin (Esth. ii. 7). The name "Hadassah" occurs here only. It is not given by the Septuagint. In the Vulgate the name is given as "Edissa." See Esther.
