English financier and lord mayor of London; born in London 1853; son of Marcus Samuel and senior partner of the shipping firm of Samuel, Samuel & Co. of Yokohama, a house of the highest standing in Japan and entrusted with the placing of the Japanese loan in 1898. Samuel was elected alderman for Portsoken Ward in 1891, and was knighted in May, 1898. He is lord of the manor at the Mote, Maidstone, and is a justice of the peace for the county of Kent. He was made a baronet in 1903 on the conclusion of his year of office as lord mayor of London.
